Description
Wood Fired Pottery Masterclass with Jack Latti
Elizabeth Bell Ceramics is thrilled to welcome Jack Latti from Studio Nioka for a rare and immersive masterclass introducing our community to the art of wood fired pottery.
The day begins at EBC Fyansford studio where you will settle in with a cup of tea or coffee before joining Jack for a discussion of the wood firing process. We will explore how fire, ash and atmosphere interact to create the rich and unpredictable glaze surfaces unique to wood firing.
With hands on time at the wheel, the focus will shift to clay. Together we will discuss different clay bodies and how they respond in a wood fired environment. Armed with this knowledge, you will experiment with the clays provided while Jack offers throwing demonstrations and guidance. Inspiration will be drawn from examples of wood fired work on display.
The aim of the day is to make up to three pieces to be fired in the Anagama kiln, which is fired twice a year for approximately 100 hours. This long, slow firing is what gives wood fired ceramics their depth, texture and character.
As part of the experience, participants are invited to view the final day of the anagama wood firing in March (date TBC) at Jack’s property in Eltham. Elizabeth will be attending the firing and car pooling from Geelong will be available for those who wish to join. This is not required to attend but included in this class investment fee.
Finished pieces will be returned to Geelong in April for collection.
You will leave the day inspired, with a deeper understanding of the wood firing process and the anticipation of seeing how fire transforms your work.
